Great Bow Yard, Langport Sustainable Architecture

bow_yard_0002

Great Bow Yard consists of 12 eco homes. They are wonderfully situated by the banks of the River Parrett allowing for views of the Somerset levels – an idyllic location. These homes are innovative as well, a model for sustainable construction, with  solar thermal panels mounted on the south facing elevations producing hot water from the sun, and the ‘sunspaces’ which help warm the houses in the winter and so reduce heating bills. They are well constructed, functional and above all beautiful homes….check out the site here .
bow_yard_0001Construction is a mixture of brick, timber frame and structural insulated panels (SIPs). The brickwork uses reclaimed bricks and lime mortar. Timber is FSC and PEFC certified with the cedar cladding sourced from South Wales. 50% of the insulation is cellulose sandwiched within the SIPs. PVC is restricted to use in SVPs and rainwater tank connections. Plywood is used in lieu of MDF and natural paints have been used throughout. A sustainable drainage system (SUDS) was used. The north wing of the development includes the use of sunspaces to optimise the solar gain available by enabling pre-heated ventilation and providing buffer space and draught lobbies.
