Surviving Winter

Last Saturday a couple of our members of Taunton Transition Town attended the Energy Forum organized by the Centre for Alternative Technology – www.cse.org.uk. There were valuable updates on the new green deal that has just been announced by the government,  the feed in tariff and the renewable energy incentive amongst other topics.

What I wanted to focus on was the Surviving Winter Appeal devised and piloted by Somerset Community Foundation in 2010 and now going into a second year.  It was set up in response to the high number of winter-related deaths (430 in 2009) and the estimated 33,000 pensioners living in fuel poverty.

Over 300 people donated last year, raising over £55,000 to help older vulnerable people last year. With their help they distributed grants to help over two hundred individuals and supported `handyman` schemes to provide emergency repairs through the winter.
