Wondering what you can do about climate change and in Sir David Attenborough’s words – ‘Our greatest threat in thousands of years.’
First step – sign the petitions to get government to act now and support more policy to mitigate climate change. Time is running out and we need as many ways as possible to save our futures from the catastrophe of climate breakdown.
Friends of the Earth
We want the UK government to adopt our Climate Action Plan by 2020, and:
- Aim for 100% clean energy.
- Invest in green and affordable transport.
- Double tree cover to tackle climate change and support nature.
- Ban fracking and stop using dirty fuels.
- Fund huge scale insulation and eco-heating schemes.
- Stop backing harmful infrastructure – like airport expansion.
- Pay our fair share to help vulnerable countries.

UK Government: Declare a Climate Emergency Now – then Act Like it
To: UK government
“We are calling on you to declare a Climate Emergency now – and then to act like it. For starters, that means:
(1) Banning all new oil and gas production in the UK, including fracking
(2) Tripling renewable energy by 2030
(3) Planting 700 million trees
(4) Introducing a Frequent Flyer Tax
(5) Ending the sale of all new petrol and diesel cars by 2030
(6) Rolling out free bus travel for young people and those on lower incomes
(7) Ending carbon emissions from heavy industry like steel and cement
(8) Creating millions of jobs in a new green economy
(9) Retrofitting our homes to go zero carbon
(10) Radically changing the farming and food system to encourage a less meat-based diet”

Second Step – get involved with local climate action groups like Transition, Extinction Rebellion etc. We can only drive real change by working together.
Third Step – change the way you live. Bank with an institution that do not invest in fossil fuels and lobby to get your pension fund invested in green investments. Buy your energy from a company that invest in renewables (see this Which Article on the options from 2017). Buy your food from local companies/farmers; eat seasonally, cut down on food waste, and eat less meat. Change your transport; try to walk and cycle for short journeys, use more public transport and cut down on air travel. Check the clothes that you buy; try second hand and look to the materials that they are made from. Want to find out more: Taunton Transition ran a project called Transition Together that helps a group to work through how they can cut their carbon emissions.. The booklet is still available in PDF format.
